In Praise of Our Volunteer Counsellors

By Bryan Wishire

Sir Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of England is well remembered for his quick wit and literary comment on a wide range of topics.  He was after all a consummate politician and leader and those that rise to the top, as he did, are seldom short of words.  Sir Winston though gave more than his share of memorable thoughts for readers and listeners to dwell on. One such quote of his sits well with me as a summation of the gift that Lifeline members give so well to others.

“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”  Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965).

For many the giving is about material things neatly tied up in a box, carefully wrapped in colourful paper.   The gift is often presented with a bow and a card suitably inscribed to someone loved, known or cared for.

What then of the gift of Lifeline?   Surely the gift of time to listen, to listen attentively, to be available when needed.  This gift soothes the soul and nurtures the spirit and is the greater gift.  The person receiving the gift is unknown, possibly never ever known.  The gift of a stranger to a stranger.

The gift you as counsellors give changes lives and we recognise and give thanks for your gift of giving.

Thank you.
