Dear Friend

Welcome to the first Lifeline E-Newsletter of 2008...

The New Year is often a time for reflection and a period of planning - reflection upon the year recently passed; and planning for the months and year ahead.

In this issue, we pursue these theme by including an article reflecting upon the measurement of happiness and the ever elusive "feel-good" factor; and the importance of  agencies such as Lifeline who play a critical and necessary part in the sensing, measuring and reporting of how communities are feeling. This reporting can inform decision makers and shape social policy.

You will also find an article by  Denis Bunbury about his re-visiting of Jane Austen's novels - where the Frankly irritating can be the means by which a more truthful view of others and of our own selves emerges.

Finally, articles "What's Happeneing at Lifeline?" will keep you up to date with some of the projects currently underway here at Lifeline and "ASIST Melbourne" reports on recent suicide intervention skills training undertaken by members of the Lifeline team  ..

Happy reading!

Best wishes

Bryan Wilshire
Chief Executive

Frank irritations and Jane Austen

by Denis Bunbury

My reading goal over the recent holidays was to re-acquaint myself with the novels of Jane Austen.

I love the way that Austen focuses on character and relationships, with perception and 'wit'.  Page after page reveals she has an unwavering eye, which she uses to observe social situations with telling irony...

And finally.......a quote

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (although written by Bessie Stanley)
