E-Newsletter March 2007 (to subscribe click here  and scroll to bottom of page!)
Dear Friend

Welcome to the March issue of our newsletter.

It seems that since last writing, summer has finally arrived with long warm days and blue skies...I hope you have been out and about and enjoying the many
festivals and events that our great city has to offer and have had time to spend with family and friends.

In this issue of our newsletter you will find articles discussing the business realities that exist in operating a modern charity and the "tension" this can
create in matching requirements of mission and vision to those of creating profitable business models.

Also in this issue is an article by Denis Bunbury entitled "Counselling in a Post Modern Age" which explores philosophical ideas of freedom and
person-centred counselling in an age where the "modern" era's ideas and assumptions about the reliability of human "reason" and of rational "truth" have
come into question.

In addition we have included an inspirational article about Alan Scott - cyclist, hypnotherapist, astrologer and painter whose pragmatic philosophy of "copying"
from the experts and mirroring their work as a way of learning new skills has led to his mastery of many fields of human endeavor.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter and I look forward to seeing many of you in the corridors of LifeLine in the month to come

Best wishes

Bryan Wilshire, Chief Executive Officer

The Balancing Act

by Bryan Wilshire

The intense competition for a limited pool of grants and donations is prompting more organisations like our
own to support their work and protect future services by generating revenue in the marketplace and by looking
to develop their own endowment funds to honour each donor's gift in perpetuity.

Counselling In A 'Post-Modern' Age

by Denis Bunbury

At a counselling seminar a few years ago, I heard the facilitator offer the words: "There are no 'oughts'".  To me this thought summed up something of the
essence of what philosophy calls our 'post-modern' age.

The above phrase would not have fallen easily on the ears of previous generations, who believed that reason could provide trustworthy norms for
ethical behaviour....

Just Do It

by Annie Bradshaw

There's a saying that goes, "if you say you can, you can, if you say you can't, you can't".

It's a phrase that relates to a man who works along the hallway in LifeLine.  He runs the 211 line and his name is
Alan Scott.  At first glance he might be described as a somewhat conservative, rather gruff character who starts
very early, eats his breakfast standing up and is a straight-talker.  To Alan Scott, there is only black and white -
nothing in between....

Last Tuesday, 0800 Kidsline made an appearance on the TV2 kids after-school show Studio2.

Representing us were Athena and Joey from the Kidsline Resource Team and Buddies Arlene and Peter.

The theme of the show was 'Back to School Blues' and invited viewers to email in their experiences to be
