Dear Friend

What changes? ...and what stays the same?

The changing landscape of own lives and the work of Lifeline is the theme for this month's newsletter.

In it you will find an article discussing the application of familiar technologies in novel situations ("Videogames that are good for you") and in "What's Happening at Lifeline" this month there is a brief introduction to some new services where technology is being applied to meet the counselling needs of young people.

In "Impact of Culture on Mental Health, East meets West" Sybil Au reflects on her presentation to the World Mental Health Conference where she spoke on the mental health needs and adjustment of Chinese immigrants to New Zealand.

The evolving need for Lifeline to work in complimentary relationships with other nonprofits and to tap into expertise within the commercial sector is discussed in the  "Changing behaviours in the delivery of social services". Whilst personal reflections on what's important in life appear in Denis Bunbury's article "I Don't Feel a Day over Twenty" and from Frauke's writings in "Who are You Really?"

Happy reading!

Best wishes

Bryan Wilshire
Chief Executive

Changing behaviours in the delivery of social services

by Bryan Wilshire

For more than one hundred and fifty years, New Zealand society's caring functions have been the work of charities (non-profits) supported by philanthropists and the Government of the day.

These charities initiated the majority of services in the social arena, health and education. Government provided some services and filled in the gaps...

I Don't Feel a Day over Twenty

By Denis Bunbury

Having just celebrated a significant birthday, I have found myself asking a question.  And that is:  what has shown itself to be so helpful that I would want to have it with me as I journey into the third third of my life?...

Videogames that are good for you

Adapted by Sarah Frayne from original article by Kathryn Hawkins

When you imagine the typical videogame addict, you probably think of a ten-year-old boy hunched in front of a jumbo TV screen.

And while young (and young-at-heart) men do make up a large percentage of the audience for videogames you might be surprised to know who else is getting pretty good with the console: Their grandparents...

Who are you really?

by Frauke

I started working for the 211 helpline a few months ago. When Sarah invited me to write something about Kinesiology for the newsletter I paused: Yes, I am registered as a natural medicine practitioner in the modality of Kinesiology but lately I have found myself moving away from muscle testing, one of its primary tools, and towards a deeper form of inquiry.

The following article was written as part of that inquiry process.
