Lifeline Presents at International Conference

by Lyndsey Fowler

Lifeline’s General Manager Anil Thapliyal has been helping to spread the word about one of Lifeline’s most innovative projects. He recently represented New Zealand at an international conference on Mental Health and spoke about The Lowdown.  Anil was invited to talk at the conference by Dr Janice Wilson from New Zealand’s Population Health Directorate.

"This annual conference aims to bring together the best practice partners internationally in Mental Health” says Anil.”

The conference for the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors promotes a Brag ‘n’ Steal concept.  Each country will present on one initiative it is particularly proud of. Dr Wilson thought if fitting that Anil present on The Lowdown as Lifeline has been a guiding partner in developing the service for youth struggling with depression.

Anil’s passion for The Lowdown was evident to his international audience. His presentation received the highest rating amongst the International presentations. America Health Boards are already discussing how they can implement a similar programme.

The Lowdown indeed a unique service.   Lifeline has been a guiding partner in developing the site’s marketing. The creative use of multi-media has helped the site engage with its youth audience who can text or email to make initial contact with The Lowdown team. As Anil points out though, ‘technology is just the enabler’. The human connection behind that first text or email to the service is essential.

Anil also reports on being inspired by fellow speakers at the conference. He hopes to integrate some of their research and ideas into upcoming projects at Lifeline. ‘There are several new projects, building upon e-therapy, in the pipeline” he promises.
