What can I expect from the training?
| | Applicants can select to undertake either an NZQA or Community Stream training. Costs associated with both streams can be found here
Training takes place over 12 weeks and includes group work, role play, individual assessments, journal work and self reflection and reading. Participants who choose to follow the NZQA path are also required to undertake specific unit standard assesments.
The Lifeline training model does not suit all trainees. Those who experience difficulties in making progress may be re-interviewed midway through intake to address any issues. Trainees may request a meeting with the Director of Counselling Services at any time.
NZQA trainees have to achieve competency in three unit standards which gives them a total of 24 credits on the NZQA framework. The course outline is based on the requirements of these unit standards.
Community stream trainees undertake the same course (except Module 4), but are not required to do assignments and are assessed differently.
Topics covered in the Lifeline training include:
- Developing a Feeling Vocabulary
- Introduction to Client centered, non-directive therapy
Active Listening Questioning and Summarising Exploration Challenging Options and Action Closure
- Depression, Grief & Suicide
Briefly our training schedule is
A whole weekend 3 x Friday evenings 1 x Saturday 3 x Friday evenings 1 x Saturday
All trainees do three Saturday Seminar mornings on the topics of Depression, Grief and Suicide.
NZQA candidates also do an additional Saturday.
Sometimes trainees are not available for specific dates, or there is illness or family problems and we do understand that, but there are a three pieces which are compulsory. These are:
First weekend – where we group build, create safety and do a lot of self awareness work
1st. Friday – where we teach active listening which is the foundation stone of our process.
Middle Saturday where we do more important self awareness and practicum work.
For other sessions we can make adjustments and plan to catch you up; but all trainees need to be at the sessions listed above.
