| What is Telephone Counselling? |
|
Telephone counselling is a process that enables callers to Lifeline to work through issues affecting their life and reach decisions that are constructive and positive.
It may be a moment of crisis in their lives, but need not be. There are times in everyone’s life when even small problems can seem insurmountable.
Telephone counselling is not "problem solving" and it is not giving the person advice, or advocating a particular course of action. It is rather, about forming an empathic and non judgmental relationship in which the caller feels safe to talk about anything, often in a way that is not possible with family or friends.
By listening attentively, the telephone counsellor can assist the caller to express thoughts and feelings and can provide an opportunity to explore them fully. In this way the caller can see things more clearly or from a different perspective.
It is a way of facilitating choice or change and supporting the caller’s decisions.
