Get the Lowdown

The Cameras rolled and the red carpet was well danced upon at the recent official opening of The Lowdown.  Lowdown is a new campaign launched by the government to help young New Zealanders understand and recover from depression.   At the heart of the campaign is The Lowdown – an interactive website aimed at young people to recognise and understand depression.

If you haven’t already seen it you must take a visit to www.thelowdown.co.nz The site is leading technology in this country but far, far more importantly; it is a totally awesome space on our worldwide net and even if you don’t partake in the beginning it’s worth looking, reading and listening.  The people waiting to talk with you are real people, most have been there, done that and they speak from their heart and soul.  Take a virtual tour to reality and pass it on to anyone who might not know about it.  It’s definitely very cool.

The site currently operates midday to midnight but the hours may extend in months to come.

Christmas Party

This year’s Christmas party drew a good crowd and the festive season was celebrated with food, wine and some humour.

Rita was in Australia but still managed to send best wishes via a filmed message.  It had all the hallmarks of the Oscars.  In fact she did present an award in a way.  She announced that effective 01 February LifeLine volunteers will no longer have to do overnights.  This doesn’t mean they will stop, it simply means LifeLine will pay counsellors to do the shifts from midnight to the early morning hours.

Mental Health Line

The Mental Health Line is due to start early next year and residents at 109 are busy interviewing, planning and preparing for the expansion.  The Mental Health line will provide a telephone based resource for callers to the Waitemata District Health Board. It will operate from 4pm to 8am weekdays and 24 hours during weekends and stat holidays.  The line has proved a challenge to set up for the team.  It’s manager, Michele Yeoman says it is a new concept and somewhere inbetween a call centre and clinical triage so establishing the service has been interesting.

Call handlers need to be experienced in mental health especially assessing risk.  The quality of applicants has been high and a great team gathered from around New Zealand is well on its way to begin training early next year. We will be interviewing again early next year in case the word gets out and people are queuing to come in!  If you are interested and want to know more, email annieb@lifeline.org.nz for a job description!

Brendan and Rikeeta will be great additions to the pool of Living Works Facilitators.  Congratulations guys!
